Halo-halo is a popular dessert in the Philippines. It’s a cold treat layered with fruits, sweetened beans, shaved ice drizzled with evaporated milk, and topped with ice cream. Halo-halo in Filipino actually means “mix-mix”!
WHAT MIX-INS CAN I USE FOR HALO-HALO?
Popular ingredients in halo-halo include: Ube, sweetened red beans (munggo), sweetened white beans, coconut gel, coconut strips, and jack fruit. Halo-halo is also often topped with flan.
The fun part about halo-halo is that you can pick any kind of fruits or flavors of mix-ins that you like! Here’s the mix-ins we used in the layers for our matcha halo-halo:
- Sweetened red beans
- Coconut gel (nata de coco)
- Aiyu jelly
- Jackfruit
These fruity and sweet layers are then topped with:
- Shaved ice
- Matcha evaporated milk
- Matcha ice cream
- Matcha Pocky sticks, for decoration
HOW DO I MAKE SHAVED ICE?
If you happen to have a shaved ice machine, use that!
If you don’t have one and don’t want to purchase one, you can easily make shaved ice in your blender! Add ice to a blender and blend until you get a very fine, fluffy, snow-like texture.
