WHAT IS BOBA?

Whether you’re new to boba or a long time boba lover, you may not know what boba is! Well, boba is essentially chewy tapioca balls, most often added to milk teas. Boba or bubble tea is a Taiwanese drink that was invented in Taichung in the 1980s.

INGREDIENTS FOR MATCHA BOBA

To make matcha boba, you will need the following ingredients:

HOW TO MAKE MATCHA BOBA

Let’s learn to make boba! Making boba consists of three main steps:

  • Making the dough
  • Rolling the pearls
  • Boiling

STEP 1: MAKING THE DOUGH

First thing’s first, we have to make the dough. The dough requires boiling water mixed with brown sugar, so before anything else, bring the sugar water to a boil. While waiting for the water to boil, combine the remainder of the ingredients- matcha and tapioca. Once the water is boiling, using a heat-proof glass container or ladle, remove ½ cup of the boiling water and add it to the dry mixture. Stir everything until a dough forms and shut off the boiling sugar water until you are ready to boil the boba balls.

STEP 2: ROLLING THE PEARLS

Break off a small portion of the dough and roll it into a log that is around the width of a pea. Using a knife, cut the log into pea-sized pieces and roll them into balls. Place in a bowl and dust the outsides with tapioca starch to prevent the pearls from sticking. Repeat the process until all the dough is used up. Note: Dust your work surface with tapioca starch to prevent sticking. If the dough becomes dry, add a few drops of the sugar water to the dough. If it’s too sticky, add more tapioca starch to your work surface.

STEP 3: BOIL

Bring the pot of brown sugar water back to a boil and add the boba pearls, stirring to ensure they don’t stick together or stick to the bottom. Lower the heat to medium-low and cover. Cook the boba pearls for 15 minutes. Once the pearls are cooked, scoop out the boba and add to a bowl with clean water and ¼ cup of the brown sugar water. Now your boba is ready to be added to any drink you like!

HOW TO ADD MATCHA BOBA TO A MATCHA LATTE

To assemble your latte, add the boba to a glass. Add your favorite kind of milk, and top with a matcha shot. To make a matcha shot, add 1-2 teaspoons of matcha to ¼ cup of water and either whisk with a bamboo whisk or shake in a jar. Pour the shot over the milk, stir, insert boba straw, and enjoy!
